Shirlington’s hip style attracts a young professional resident base, although the community is well suited for families as well. Entertainment might come in the form of a relaxing bike ride, viewing of an independent film at the Cineplex Odeon or simply hanging out with friends at a local restaurant, pub or coffee house. Kids will want to spend some free time at Jennie Dean Park, Utah Park, Shirlington Park or Shirlington Library.
Public education in Shirlington is provided by Arlington Public Schools (APS). APS has some excellent credentials; students do very well on standardized tests and the graduation rate is over 90 percent. APS generates many National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists each year as well. The district manages more than 30 schools and secondary programs.
After high school, students have several options nearby. George Washington University, American University, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Georgetown University and Howard University are all just a few miles away. All of these except for UDC are private institutions. The nearest community college is Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Va.
The climate of Shirlington is characterized by warm summers, cool winters and moderate, year-round rainfall. In July and August, temperatures fluctuate between the high 60s and the high 80s. During December and January, the temperature range dips down to lows in the 20s to highs in the 40s. Annual rainfall is about 45 inches, with roughly 3-4 inches falling each month.
